Today's post is a little close distance dedication for a good friend, who has apparently made it his mission lately to make sure that I am staying on the positive side. Since reconnecting, his texts and phone calls keep me smiling.
Back in the day, I remember he was always a sweet guy who had no trouble coaxing a smile or laugh out of me, and he always dressed like a rock star. But in the 80's, who didn't ? In my mind's eye, he will forever be the kid with spiked hair and parachute pants. I was the Senior and he was one of the underclassmen that I "allowed" to hang out with me and my BFF and partner in crime. I think it was because I was willing to drive them around. When he was finally driving age, his parents had purchased a 1970's era Trans Am, that he drove throughout high school before finally selling it. He was telling me just the other night that he thinks that he has found it again, and is in negotiations with its current owner to obtain it. Despite needing a little love, it still runs. I hope he gets it. Wouldn't that be cool?
For some reason, he was nicknamed after this song. Not sure I want to hazard a guess as to why, but it's still a really cool song.
"Love Gun" KISS from the album of the same name (Casablanca Records 1977)
I saw this today on Facebook and had to share it. Though my brother may not remember, this was once his favorite song. Who am I kidding, it was my favorite too.
Recorded by Tanya Tucker when she was only 13, after hearing Bette Midler sing it on The Tonite Show. The rest is music history.
I was surprised to see that she was still singing, although not completely. Most of the good, truly talented entertainers still do. Kinda hard to believe she is 56.
So I made good on my promise to buy Meghan Trainor's new cd (though not on the day it dropped. ) I wound up making it a Valentine's present to myself. .
It is pretty good and exactly what was expected, A lot of positive, feel goodisms about self-esteem, respect and being worthy of more than a liar and cheat, a few colorful words, some pretty good double entendres, all wrapped up in some catchy doo-wop tunes.
The surprising thing is that all the songs are as good, and equally as catchy as All About That Bass. Ms Trainor's heliumesque rap style mixed with classic doo-wop melodies is a fresh and easy to follow. And surprisingly each song is different from the one before it.
A particular favorite is "Dear Future Husband," "Title" and "What if I"
Credits on the label credit Trainor and various other writers.
Okay, I know that sounds really stupid coming from me, the classic rock/heavy metal/ hair band lover that I am. Who knew this girl had such insight? When her album drops January 2015, I will be first in line to get it.
All About That Bass (single) - Meghan Trainor - Epic 2014
(ya gotta love the guy in the pink shirt!)
This little ditty is the brain-child of 20 year old rising star (or future one hit wonder...who knows) Meghan Trainor. It's catchy beat, doo-wop undertone and Meghan's baby doll voice has made this song a hit. Throw in the "love your body" message and this one keeps everyone humming.
How much healthier would my self-esteem be today if ths song was around when I was growing up?
Even when I was thin, there was someone pointing out things I shouldn't love about myself. When I became a big girl, I just wanted to hide and become one of those people that you read about when they are cutting the wall out of their house to remove their dead bodies with a forklift. Now Miss Meghan is far from what I would call "fat." As a matter of fact, the only person in the whole video who would possibly benefit from that description might just be the fella in the pink shirt, and he is getting his groove on like nobody's business.
It took me nearly my whole life to decide to be happy with myself and it took just that action.
Deciding to be happy.
Now don't think that I am going to let myself go or anything. I am having to watch what I eat for my ticker, and to keep my diabetes in check because Lord help me, I will NOT be put on dialasys when I am old. I am just more forgiving of myself. The added dilligence has rewarded me with a much smaller pants size and a surprisingly younger-looking, healthier appearance. Many have commented about how much better I look now than I did ten years ago. And trust me, I am getting no complaints.
Of course, there is a "bass" worthy girl trapped inside, screaming for cake, cookies and bread. She and I dance on a daily basis. She wants to fudge and eat bbq and white cheddar cheese dip every day. I take her Whole Foods and shut her up with steamed kale and grilled portabello mushrooms.
Where does the time go?!
We are really gettting into the heart of our season here at work. I have been too busy to post on my lunch and too tired to post after work. I am FULLY aware that I need to blog about our fabulous weekend in the Loveliest Village on the Plains
Did I ever mention how hectic holday weeks seem to be? What is it about having a 4 day week that throws my schedule so off kilter?
I am currently adding to m DVD collection. You know how music in movies sets the tone or evokes a feeling.
I have noticed that there are two songs that keep coming around in the movies that I am buying. They both set very specific tones for me when ever I hear them.
For the start to my weekend, I share them both with you.
Okay, I am not a Taylor Swift fan. Not even back when Kit-Kat was little and obsessed with all things Taylor Swift. This is a little too bubble-gum pop for me.
But I like this song, and the message it conveys. Shake It Off. I could have used this six months ago.
Maybe someone can use it today.
"Shake It Off" ~Taylor Swift
To be released on upcoming album, 1989 = Big Machine Records 2014
( I know, not the exact quote, but I try not to take the Lord's name in vain, even when it's positive)
What a rough week! I am so glad that it is over.
I have turned over a new leaf in the past few months:
I DON'T DO "DRAMA" ANYMORE!
No bickering, no ya-ya-ing, no gossiping, no histrionics, no games. ZERO Drama. Surprisingly, I am really happy now. And relieved to be far removed from all the foul-mouthed, second grade, finger pointing, crap-stiring antics. Grown adults that perpetuate these situations, really should be ashamed of themselves.
The call from The Ultimate Drama Queen (a.k.a. my grandmother) last weekend, convinced me that I do not want to grow up to be her.
I do not see how someone-who-shall-remain nameless---(read: D/H) managed to stir up so much drama the whole time we were together. There was always something that he was in the middle of, and if he wasn't, he would somehow manage to get drawn in. It was almost like it was his life-blood: without some sort of constant drama, he would die or something. There was a steady stream of crap, that he could get me all worked up over, for the past 17 years. Now, it seems as if it was all invented or over-inflated just to draw me in too! But I admit, that we were never closer than all the times when we were "slaying dragons" together. But when all the dragons are gone, that just leaves two people with nothing in common any more.
I was amazed at how simple my life became since he has been gone. The drama all but disappeared. It is so much healthier now, and I like it.
Anyway...
The temperature fluctuations have my sinuses all messed up. I am taking meds and they are making me groggy. I nearly overslept this morning for the 3rd morning in a row.
Cotton is out of the hospital. Thank you for all who prayed.
I watched "The Other Woman" last night. I highly recommend it. It is all about the other woman finding out that her man is married, befriending the wife, and eventually the other woman that he is cheating on them both with, and enacting sweet revenge. Classic.
Speaking of last night....
When I turned on my tv, it was set on the channel that "So You Think You Can Dance." The opening number was a colorful, frenetic number set to THIS song. I woke up singing the chorus (cause really, that was all I caught) Darn those hip hop hooks. They get you every time.
T-Minus 28 hours and counting until my date with The Tech Guy.
I am a little nervous, a little excited, but also kind of dreading it. Why?
Well, he is older than me. He had been a Senior when I was a Frosh. Everyone else who you have been reading about here have been younger than me (W is the closest to my age by a mere 6 weeks, but is still younger). That is not bothering me so much as this next little factoid:
He's a grandpa.
Yeah, I know. I would give my eye-teeth for a grandchild, not that any of my children are at that point right now. But I would love a little someone, who would adore me, whom I could spoil, and then give back to their parents.
Every time I think about it, I think of little old men with canes and wrinkly skin. Yeesh! Nothing sexy about that. But he is a nice guy, and if nothing else, we will have a nice time.
And there is something else about him being a grandpa that brings me face to face with another little fact:
I am old too.
(Shhhhh! We will not be convincing ourselves that we are old!! That begins to make us look old! I have seen the horrific damage that starting to think of oneself as old has done first hand, and it will NOT be happening to me!!)
He has a lovely evening planned (or so he keeps telling me) at a restaurant so ridiculously expensive I am not certain what to do. I certainly won't know how to act.
With the exception of that first dinner in Mississippi with L/G, I really haven't been "out" to dinner with a man. L/G cooked the rest of the time I was there, and W and I don't really eat, as much as we snack.
D/H would only take me out after we had our taxes done. Otherwise I would have to pay for it. Always. As a matter of fact, I have had to pay for my own dinner for so long now, I would just be happy with a 12 pack of tacos from Taco Bell if I didn't have to pay for it myself.
So with that, wish me luck. If anything I will get a really nice, expensive dinner, and interesting conversation.
...Oh, And....
I have saved the very best for last.
Happy 55th Birthday to Def Leppard front man Joe Elliott
Regardless of how much time passes Joe, I will always remember you just like this
Not sure if it is because not only my boss but the supervisor are both out and I am in charge all by myself, or if it was because last week I was on such a high before the Def Leppard/ KISS concert, but what ever it was, it has been pretty excruciating.
I am happy to say that I made it to Friday!
Tomorrow night is our 29th high school reunion. Why the 29th? The class of 1984 invited us to join their 30th reunion, because the class of 1985 is a bunch of slackers. Sorry, but it's true.
I am looking forward to it, but I am also not. I will have to go alone. W will have his boys.
But I will get to see a lot of the class of 1984 that I haven't seen in a long time, so that will be fun.
I will post pictures later.
Today I thought I'd post a side by side comparison shot of my Auburn polo dress. The picuture on the right was taken last September. I can tell a difference.
I don't usually take photographs with my glasses on, but in the interest of continuity between this year's picture and last, I thought I'd recreate it as exactly as I could. I can't "pop my toe" (a pageant trick) in this one because I can't stand the weight on my injured foot. Thanks to the ol' broken toes, I am wearing differnt flip flops too, but it's basically the same.
Well, less 30 pounds.
Well, here is a song for the road. One of my friends, affectionately known as "The Highlander" for reasons that are obvious to all who know him, got this song stuck in my head. I understand that this sond is actually from 1965, by someone named Gloria Jones, so the Soft Cell from 1981 is NOT the original. But it is the one everyone my age identifies with, so I have included it for old times sake
Tainted Love - Soft Cell 1981
Non-Stop Erotic Caberet -Some Bizzare Records
But this edgier version from Marilyn Manson is my favorite.
Thank God the weekend is here. Now to just get through the next eigth hours.
Yesterday I did wind up going home, propping my foot up, taking some pretty serious pain meds and sleeping the rest of the day away. Cyn, BFF and partner in crime, a nurse in another life, checked my taping, brought me shrimp soup for lunch (and eventually dinner), meds and a cane to use.
By the time I had reached the house, one could not tell where my foot ended and my leg began. I propped my feet up on pillows, and the meds put me to sleep. When I awoke at 7:00 p.m., the swelling had gone down and I felt much better. I had missed calls from my boss, the LifeGuard, Cyn and W, all calling to check on me.
Heaven knows what I may get done this weekend, but I can at least stay still.
Speaking of Heaven Knows, I had no idea when I posted earlier this week about "Cindy Lou Who," that the rockin' song that I have come to LOVE playing lately on local radio, "Heaven Knows" was ALSO by Taylor Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless!
What a coincidence!
I couldn't find a YouTub link but you can check it out with the link below
(Parental Advisory: There is a point where this girl is practically naked)
Confession time: I'm a 50-something Alabama girl, with big city ideas just lucky enough to be raised in a small town. Why "Just Joy"? When I was a kid, people always tried to call me Joyce and I'd respond "No, it's JUST JOY." I've been known as that ever since! (Just Joy for over 40 years now...take that fake "just joy's") Mother of 3: my oldest daughter "Julz",my boy, "Tigger", and my baby-girl, "Kit-Kat". I'm a blue-eyed, Baptist, baton-twirler who still enjoys a good "dress up vacation" and occassionally comes home with a crown souvenir.
My heart bleeds orange & blue ~War Eagle! I work for a coffee company. I've wanted to be a writer since I was about 10 years old, but looks like this is as close as I'm ever going to get. This is my point of view, regardless of how slanted it may be. My motto for life I stole from Gene Simmons: "Any day above ground is a good day."
